We were asked to develop a website that was easy to update and had the ability to keep its growth constant by allowing the client to add text and graphics over a long period of time.

The website is for Nature Kenya the business name of the East African Natural History Society that was set up in 1909. Yes, That is right they are celebrating 100 years of nature this year. Nature Kenya aims to promote the study and conservation of the natural environment, in eastern Africa.

The website was commissioned on the basis of the vast birdlife in Kenya and the interest this generates both locally and globally. The website aims to provide information to birders about where its best to stay, who it is best to take a tour with and also more general content, such as Important Bird Areas, downloads of various types.

The website is also designed to be a source of research information for Nature Kenya. Through the website Nature Kenya can ask its audience to answer questions using the various functions we have added to the site.

The website has various user roles ranging from the Super Admin who controls the entire site to juniour editors who feed it with content and contributors who comment and share their opinions on what is posted.

I am finally on Wordpress, I have been extolling its virtues for nearly three years now but have never implemented it on my own website. That, however, was last month – this month we have a light and fully dynamic website running on Wordpress, and a theme that I created based on another website.

We ended up with this theme because a client challenged me to create a wordpress site nearly a year ago on wordpress, i have been playing around in illustrator and photoshop trying to create a theme but never really managed to finish.

I sometimes did a mediocre theme that wasn’t worth actually transforming into a fully functional working theme simply because the open source alternatives are so much better. On another occasion i did a spectacular banner, never got round to doing the whole site but i did do a spectacular banner .

Anyway, my client did not forget what he had asked me to do and I could not stop singing about Wordpress – I couldn’t help it because when websites are discussed, it just rolls off my tongue!

So he decided HE would pick a site for me and to duplicate but customize to meet my own needs, so this theme was born… I will buy the first person to figure from whence this theme was ripped off a big tub of butter!

Anyway, the site is done, the challenge completed and I am feeling pretty good about converting yet another person to wordpress (even if its just me) – the decent site is just a bonus…

Themes for CMS systems go from strength to strength, at some point we decided we wanted to get into the fray and also submit our contribution. We feel like all the free themes are actually just a way for us to say thank you to the developers.

They develop the CMS for use by everyday Joe, but if there were no attractive themes for everyday Joe to use, well then that CMS can just kiss life goodbye. So since we love wordpress so much we decided that we too would develop a theme for wordpress.

We decided it would be the kick assest theme ever. But developing the kick assest theme ever is no easy task, especially because there are so many genres out there. So we decided we would develop the kick assest wordpress theme for a membership based NGO.

We picked the East African Society to model the theme upon or for and we ended up with the massive design you see below. we are very proud of the idea but not so much of the inactiont hat followed the initial design. We haven’t done anything – shame on us… but still thought it would be cool to share our initial idea.

Anyone interested in taking it to the next step, please contact us and we will supply the relevant files…

The East African Wildlife Society asked us to develop a rate card for their magazine Swara which we are also in the process of redesigning.

The magazine as is right now is a natural history publication that also features issues affecting wildlife, features on various species of flora and fauna, interviews with personalities in the wildlife sector and more in that line.

The rate card needed to be light (for e-mail purposes), not too many pages (reduce the cost of printing it) and also contain all the data required by potential advertisers.

So we made it one page and less than 500kb, useful for mailing. What do you think of it?

KOAN got a new look website from Job Ballard Design. The new websites main feature was a multifunctional CMS that allows KOAN to edit the entire website on their own.

The Kenya Organic Agricultural Network (KOAN) is the National Coordinating body for Organic Agricultural activities in Kenya. Koan emerged from a consultative process where organic practitioners agreed to come and work together to achieve the synergy required to develop the organic sub sector.

The KOAN website is designed to be a hub for exporters, importers and consumers of organic products both locally and internationally. On it you can find up to date information that will help you figure out how you can import to and export from Kenya.

You will also find information about how to gain organic certification and the standards required before you can do so. There is also much more on the site. More features include various databases that will help you find anything organic from restaurants to jewelry.

A favourite feature of ours is the search function where you can search for a supplier based on the fruit you’d like.

Visit the site here then come back and leave your comments.
